Gauloises cigarettes are made by French tobacco manufacturer known as Altadis Tobacco Company. This brand was first sold in the year 1910 by the company named Seita. The popularity of this brand soared after the launch of Filter Gauloises in the 1950's. This 100 year old brand has established itself as one of the most popular brands in the world tobacco market. In the year 2005 the production of this brand was moved from France to Spain, because of decreasing demand and poor profit. This brand is currently manufactured by Imperial Tobacco Company.

This brand means a lot to the French people as it represents history of France and smoking it is considered as patriotic and a symbol of French values. French people love smoking this brand and hold this brand dear to the heart. Gauloises cigarettes were the most preferred brand for some famous personalities like Jean Paul Sartre, Roman Polanski, George Orwell, and Pablo Picasso. Gauloises cigarette is smoked by Jean Reno's character in the movie "Ronin."
Gauloises cigarettes were earlier made using dark tobacco from Turkey and Syria. These cigarettes were very strong and hence not famous in the United States. To boost their sales in US, Gauloises introduced a new version with white tobacco as their main ingredient. This cigarette was relatively light and rich in tobacco taste. This new version was named Gauloises Blondes.
Gauloises Blondes were similar in strength and taste to other premium brands like Camel, Salem, and Kent. The strength might have changed but they still retain the basic characteristics of the old Gauloises cigarettes. When talking about Gauloises, people generally refer to two specific varieties: Gauloises Legeres (red pack) and Gauloises Filtre (blue pack).
